Valentine’s Day Fun

by abby on February 8, 2013 | Comment

Valentine’s Day is less than a week away! Do you know how you will be celebrating? When I was young, one of my friend’s would host a Valentine’s Day party. I have such happy memories of those afternoons eating red heart jigglers (remember those from Jello?) and playing silly games.

I think it was those positive thoughts that inspire me to create my red and pink heart cupcake toppers. Don’t these hearts make you smile? They instantly made your cupcakes look fun for both kids and adults! And the best part they work for either store bought cupcakes or homemade. Whoo-ooo! If you want a delicious chocolate cupcake recipe check out the Magnolia Bakery one here.

Merry Celebrating

Bird ornament
{This is our bird ornament called Scooter. We have the tendency to name things!}

It’s finally here—the start of the long Christmas weekend! Whoo-ooo! D and I are heading even more north to spend the long holiday weekend with his family. We are both excited to start the festivities and continue on the traditions (like warm homemade sticky buns on Christmas morning—yum.)

Of course, our own home is decorated for both Chanukah and Christmas. We already celebrated Chanukah earlier in the month and our own Christmas will be happening when we get back from traveling. It’s a true Christmukah at our house. As a bit of fun, I thought I’d share a few snap shots from around our house.

Garfield ornament

As you know I have a soft spot for Garfield, so of course he’s on our tree! Our tree is a great blend of traditional ornaments and fun, playful ones. It’s amazing how your tree shows the personality of its couple or family.

cookie cutter ornaments

Yep, those are Chanukah cookie cutter ornaments! I wanted to add a touch of the “festival of lights” to our tree, so I came up with the idea to hang my menorah and dreidel cookie cutters. I think it looks great and love the blending the two holidays.

And speaking of blending traditions this picture book:

holiday picture book

Daddy Christmas & Hanukkah Mama, is a wonderful story that shows how one family blends and respects both Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations. Does your family blend traditions too? I’d love to hear what you do!

I want to wish you a VERY merry week of celebrating with family and friends. And I hope you are as content as a snowman sitting in a dish of red and green M&Ms!

Christmas Mitten Cards

Nuestras Manos

My green and red Christmas Mitten Holiday Cards have been the best-selling item in my shop this holiday season. Yay! (You never can guess which item will be the most popular). These cards caught the eye of Alex from Nuestras Manos, a store based in southern California that specializes in vintage and handmade goods. Their store is in a REALLY COOL vintage camper!

Their store name translates to Our Hands, so you can see why the Christmas Mitten cards were a great match for their store. The Nuetras Manos shop is very new, so be sure to spread the word to all your friends and family out west that they should definitely stop and check out it out!

The green holiday mittens cards also got the attention of LaTonya Shaw founder of Kurbuhaun.com, a site that promotes handmade goods and artwork. Today she’s featured my Green Mitten Card in her blog called: HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT HANDMADE GREETING CARDS. LaTonya explains how a well designed handmade card can become the gift in itself and that the card should match the person you’re sending it to. “With a bit of creativity, you can turn a card into a great gift. Select greeting cards that leave a little space for you to write a personal message. Words have the power to turn a gloomy day into a wonderful day.” Amen! All it takes is a little time on your end to include a thoughtful handwritten note and there are sure to be smiles on both ends of the mail.

It’s not too late if you haven’t sent Christmas cards yet. It’s the holiday season which means that your card can arrive after the 25th without worry. Plus, many of my holiday cards are now on sale!

What’s the most memorable card you’ve ever received?

Sharing A Holiday Hug

holiday hug

I’m going let you in on a secret…I’m a big Garfield fan. This strip is one of my favorites! Doesn’t it just make you smile?! Garfield has a great way of sharing life’s truths with you. My other favorite Garfield truth that’s perfect for Christmas and Chanukah: “It’s not the giving. It’s not the receiving. It’s the loving.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. So, in all of this holiday craziness, I’m sending you a holiday hug to help you regain your composure, exercise your smile, and to feel your heart.

Pass this one to anyone who need a hug too!

Easter Colors

handmade paper party decorations

Here’s a little preview on a few Easter garlands I’m creating! Don’t you just love the pastel colors? They make me instantly happy. I can’t wait to pull them together and decorate my own mantle for Spring. These garlands will be available in my Etsy shop next week, so you, too, can celebrate the arrival of warmer days.

I have one more than to share with you. I recently had one of my animal fabric collage paintings framed…
baby animal art

Ta-da! I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. The yellows and greens pop against the white matte and frame. This framed piece of art would make a wonderful addition to a baby’s room. And it would work for either a boy or a girl! If you are interested in purchasing this original, please send me a note and I’ll provide you with all the details. I also have high quality digital prints of the mother and baby giraffe available for sale. They are printed on watercolor paper and have the look and feel of an actual painting. How ever you want to do it, here at AbbyDora Design, we want you to decorate your walls with art!

Easter Art & Cards

vintage paper collage artwork

I’m been painting and painting these last few weeks to make several new pieces for Spring and Easter. I love how brightly colored my two mini egg collage paintings turned out.

The paintings are much looser than I traditionally work. It felt great to add strokes of color here and there by responding to the painting as I went along. I didn’t start with a plan, I just began to paint and add bits of vintage paper. So refreshing!

I’m offering each of these painting as Happy Easter cards paired with magenta and yellow envelopes.

They also look great framed as a digital print for your house!

Both the cards and the prints are now available at my Etsy store. Shake off the gray of winter and browse the new artwork of spring!

Happy Valentine’s Day! This is another great quote that I came across recently and wanted to share with you. This quote makes me realize that our actions truly do have more impact than our words alone. So on this day of hearts and chocolate, be sure to gift hugs to the people you love!
