New Ocean Sketch

{sketch for a new series}

Happy Friday everyone! In between teaching and lesson planning I’m still fitting in time to create new artwork and even some book design. It’s definitely been a busy Fall so far! Today, I wanted to share a sketch from a new series featuring 2 sisters having a few ocean adventures. In this scene, the girls are exploring a tide pool and came upon a feisty crab. Does it make you smile too?

There are 2 more illustrations in this series, which will be a surprise until they are completed. The illustrations will be a combination of watercolor and gouache painting with collage backgrounds. The overall look will be very similar to my Hot Air Balloon illustration.

After a day of interacting with students and being on a lively campus, it feels restorative to sit down at my drawing table and quietly create my art. When you get into an “art zone” you loose track of time and it’s almost meditative. I’ve learned to appreciate my drawing table time even more now.

My birthday is next Frdaiy an D has something up his sleeve this weekend for us to celebrate. He’s being crafty and keeping it a secret. I do love surprises!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Marvelous Moms and the Arrival of Fall

After doing weekend long art festivals this summer, it felt so good just to have to set up a single AbbyDora Design table display! I had a great time at the Beyond the Bump event last Saturday. I met so many joyous new moms and eagerly expecting moms with their own mothers too. I’m very honored that several more pieces of my artwork will be decorating the walls of these new children. I hope I inspire them to love color, read books, and imagine!

AND over the weekend, came the official start of Fall! Hooray, it’s my favorite season hands down. I love the changing leaves and the crisp, cooler sunlight. Have you checked out AbbyDora’s Fall themed greeting cards? For instance there’s the Black Cat Halloween card featuring hand lettering.

Are you doing any fun FALL activities this week?

company supporting new moms

Hey expecting moms and new moms of Rochester! There’s a new organization based here in Rochester, NY, that is here to support you and your new baby. This organization is called Beyond the Bump. It’s the creation of news moms, Melissa Bowie and Monica Infante. They both had babies last year and realized there was a gap in the market for a resource to find answers and meet other new and expectant moms. Beyond the Bump is filling that gap and seeking to help women navigate pregnancy and their first year of being a mom.

This Saturday September 21st, Beyond the Bump is hosting a face-face event for moms-to-be and new moms at the Doubletree Hotel in Henrietta. Come meet other expecting ladies, attend seminars and demonstrations led by local experts, meet best-selling author of The Mother of All Books, Ann Douglas. Oh and there are FREE neck and shoulder massages, complimentary “bump” photos, and gift bags & door prizes too!

AbbyDora Design be attending this event has a chosen exhibitor during the lunch hour Market from 11-2pm. Our table will be featuring great ways to decorate a nursery or child’s room. We will have our vibrant children’s art watercolor prints, our animals on panel prints, and then playful handmade cards.

Being an exhibitor I have the added perk to pass along discounted tickets to you! Be a special guest of AbbyDora Design and receive $10 off the ticket price (reg price $25). Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think would benefit from this fun and informative event.

Happy Fall!

I’m happy to announce that finally the wait is over and that starting today all my new summer watercolor paintings are now available as fine art digital watercolor prints in my Etsy Shoppe! Now is the time to add color to that wall (huge smile).

To those who visited my art festival booths over the summer, you now can find prints of the: ABC Giraffe, Animal Parade, Hot Air Balloon Adventure, Brooklyn Bunny, and the 5 Speckled Frogs in my shoppe. And thanks to an Etsy listing upgrade, I can now offer even more print sizes and price points than ever before within a single listing. Thank you Etsy!

To see the print size options, simply click on the size drop down menu within the selected item. I offer a full range of sizes from small 5″x 7″ images all the way up to large 11″ x 14″ images. I’m sure there’s a size for you! I encourage everyone to take a moment and head on over to my store to see what’s new and check out my Halloween and Thanksgiving cards and prints as well. Fall is starting to be in the air and it’s time to start thinking holidays. I’ll be adding even more holiday paper fun in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Happy Shopping!

With the popularity of my animal panel collections at this year’s art festivals I’m thinking of creating a new set and would love your input! I’ve created a FARM ANIMAL collection and a WILD ANIMAL collection, but what should the next one be?

A couple ideas that you suggested to me last week were a beach/ocean series or woodland forest creatures? Which animals would YOU like to see?

If you have some thoughts please post your ideas in the comment section or on the AbbyDora Design facebook page (have you LIKED US yet?) Thank you in advance!

Art-felt Thank You

My first Clothesline Art Festival was a huge success! Thank you very much to all who stopped by the AbbyDora Design booth. Your kind words and smiles made my heart sing! I feel reassured that YES I am on the right path and that my artwork speaks to people—both to the young and to the young at heart.

A special thank you too to all who were moved to break out in song and vocalize the “5 Little Speckled Frogs sitting on a Speckled log…”. I just loved it!

As you know my booth and my artwork is all about shape and color. I had an unexpected visitor over the weekend who is also a big fan of color.

The weekend for the annual Clotheslines Art Festival has arrived! Soon the grounds surrounding Rochester’s art museum will be dotted in little white booths bursting with all sort of paintings, prints, jewelry, and fine crafts. I’m so excited to be a part of this collection of artists! I start setting up my brightly colored booth this afternoon, but here’s when you can arrive:

SEPT 7th & SEPT 8th
Saturday 10 am to 6 pm; Sunday 10 am to 5 pm

This festival is a fund raiser for Rochester’s art museum. For a small fee you get access for over 400 fine artists, music, and local cusine.

Admission: $5 at the gate; children 10 and under free if accompanied by an adult; includes Gallery admission. No pets (except service animals), bicyclists should enter at Prince Street and check bikes at the RCA Bicycle Valet. Parking information is available too.

The AbbyDora Design Booth will be located on the Goodman Street side of the art museum (Zone B). Keep those eyes out for my bright green and teal banner!

My children’s art will be the main event in my booth. I’ll be featuring original paintings and fine art prints in all sort of sizes that will fit many standard frames too. And now with a chill in the air here in update New York, I’ll also be showcasing a few holiday items too.

I’ll be showing several Halloween and Thanksgiving cards, and even a few Christmas/Hanukkah cards. Why not shop for a few holiday items before your Fall and holiday schedules become too hectic?

I hope I will see you this weekend!

Camp Watercolor Sketch

watercolor sketch of upstate NY fishing spot
{painting up at camp}

In between teaching and preparing for the Clothesline Festival (it’s happening THIS weekend!) D and I spent the long weekend in the great outdoors in upstate NY with his family.

Being at the family camp was a great break. We had a cook out for lunch, sat around in the sunshine, and as a caravan the whole family climbed onto 4-wheelers and we explored the woods around camp. The final round of fun was fishing at nearby pond. I took this opportunity to create a quick watercolor sketch (above) of all the nieces with their Dads fishing.

D and his sneaky camera caught me in the act of painting!

4-wheelers make great art tables too! It was delightful to be outside painting. I truly love it and its becoming more and more of a natural habit to stop and pick up my brushes.

How did you spend the long weekend?
